The first week in the CFL was insane. Three of the four games were decided by three or fewer points, and numerous players people didn’t have their fantasy radar made a name for themselves. That’s what week one in fantasy is. This leads to overreaction, which shouldn’t happen since it’s just one week. Here are the players who made an impact in Week One, and who will make an impact in CFL Fantasy Week 2, without breaking the bank.
CFL Fantasy Week 2
Trevor Harris, Quarterback, Redblacks
When Henry Burris went down with a finger injury last season, Trevor Harris shone in relief. He threw over three thousand yards for 16 touchdowns and just four picks while completing 73.3 percent of his passes. All of these stats were tops in the CFL in that 12-game span. In the prior year in Toronto, Harris similarly displayed his abilities as a number one quarterback, though perhaps not as dramatically. In both years he struggled when the starter, Ricky Ray or Burris, was healthy and sitting behind him. This element isn’t present in 2017. Ottawa belongs to the 31-year-old now.
In their first week matchup with the Calgary Stampeders, he went toe for toe with the reigning MOP, Bo Levi Mitchell. He stats line was 33 for 45 for 300 yards plus three scores and one pick. He put up the third most fantasy points among quarterbacks, trailing Mitchell by 0.6. Harris is the second cheapest pivot on fantasy this week. If you buy Harris, who has put up big numbers, they you have extra money to throw at a different position.
William Powell, Running Back, Redblacks
Before Powell’s 2016 season was ended by an Achilles injury, he had moments where he looked like a star back. In just seven games, the Kansas State product accumulated 605 yards on 95 touches, along with three majors. He picked up where he left off against the Stamps, putting up 30 rushing yards on five carries and a six-yard receiving touchdown before he left the game with an ankle injury. The 29-year-old is dressing and is listed ahead of Mossis Madu in Thursday’s rematch with Calgary. If he put up 9.6 fantasy points in one half, imagine what he can do in a full game.
Nic Demski Wide Receiver, Roughriders
When Duron Carter was locked down by Jonathan Mincy and the rest of the Alouettes kept Naaman Roosevelt to a limited game, Kevin Glenn had to look elsewhere. That’s when Demski got some time as a prime target. He had a career night with seven grabs for 87 yards. He showed off his speed in the second quarter when he took a quick pass and turned it into a 33-yard gain. The Canadian is quick and will continue to see playing time while Chad Owens is out for “an extended period of time,” according to head coach Chris Jones. The Winnipeg native has the potential to evolve into Glenn’s security blanket. He’s among the cheapest receivers in fantasy as well.
Kamar Jorden, Wide Receiver, Stampeders
Fellow Stamp receiver Davaris Daniels has a chance of being out a month with an upper body injury he endured in Friday’s tie against the Redblacks. This news instantly increased the value of Kamar Jorden’s stock. In the same contest, he was targeted 11 times, making five snatches for 72 yards, and he found the end zone once. He’ll be expected to fill Daniels’ shoes; with Mitchell throwing the ball, the 28-year-old could have a monster game in the rematch on Thursday. Jorden is very cheap considering the elevated role he’ll undoubtedly have.
