You think you know your Saints history? We all think we do. In preparation for this coming season, I thought it might be interesting to test ourselves to see just how much we know about Saints lore. So here a few factoids about the Saints. For interest’s sake, I explained whether I was familiar with each of them. I’m sure you already knew some of them, while some you weren’t quite sure of, and others you just didn’t know at all.
WHO KNEW?
The New Orleans Saints organazation was established in 1967 and was a part of three different “divisions”. The Eastern Conference, Capitol Division and the Century Division. The 1970’s brought a new era in The National Football League and the New Orleans Saints were then a part of what is now known as the National Football Conference (NFC), first representing the West 1970-2001, before permanently residing in the South.
KNEW THAT – Anyone who is a Saints fan knows the ABC’S of our establishment and our establishing ourselves in The NFL.
WHO KNEW?
The New Orleans Saints name is an allusion to November 1, All Saints Day, derived fom the Catholic faith.
KNEW THAT – Growing up Saints you hear things.
WHO KNEW?
The New Orleans Saints fight song (as they call it) is “When the Saints come marching in”.
KNEW THAT – DUH!!!
WHO KNEW?
The New Orleans Saints have not one, but two mascots?
DID NOT KNOW THAT – When researching the reasoning behind a beagle as a mascot (Really? Just because you name him GUMBO doesnt mean he reps properly), that I stumbled upon a big-faced man with a very long chin whom they call ” Sir Saint “. I became totally disheartend by this and came up with a solution…Owliver “the whoooo dat” Owl. What appeal, what charisma, and his own chant “WHOOO DAT”. I thought it was kind of catchy. Still waiting on the Saints organazation to get back to me on that.
WHO KNEW?
The New Orleans Saints have won 1 Superbowl,1 Conference Championship, 5 Divisional – 2 in the West and 3 in the South, 9 playoff appearences
KNEW THAT – Yes, non-belivers, 9 playoff appearnces 87, 90, 91, 92, 2000, 06, 09, 2010 and 2011, but only with one of those bringing the ultimate victory.
WHO KNEW?
Drew Brees holds the NFL single season record for most passing yards, 5,476.
KNEW THAT – He is also the fastest player in NFL history to reach 40,00 yards passing and is the ONLY player in NFL history to have multiple 5,000 yard passing seasons! How ya like me now, Aaron Rodgers?
WHO KNEW?
During the Mike Ditka Era, which spanned only 3 years, the New Orleans Saints had 7 (yes, 7) starting QBs, two of which were named Bobby Joe.
DID NOT KNOW THAT…Bobby Joe was such a popular name. Others also included Heath Shuler, Danny Wuerffiel, Doug Nussmeier, Hobert (Billy Joe),Tolliver (Billy Jo), Kerry Collins and Jake Delhomme.
WHO KNEW?
The NFC South is only division to have all four teams win two divisional titles each.
KNEW THAT – My Saints had, but happy to find out that our divisional rivals are holding it down with us.
WHO KNEW?
Marquess Colston played 16 consecutive games with an injured foot and still caught 83 passes.
DID NOT KNOW THAT – Which brings me to my next and final…
WHO KNEW?
The syndrome in which caused not only Marquess Colston and Devery Henderson to miss so many crucial passes in this past year’s season is called The “BUTTERFINGERS ” syndrome. It’s a condition that comes on fast and is known to be contagious among players.
KNEW THAT – Not really. Just a little something I came up with last year. Although a few other players like Lance Moore and Jimmy Graham showed symptoms of this condition as well. I’m sure that Sean Payton has found the cure for that though. Remember the “Do Your Job” campaign?
Counting down days until we bring that Lombardi back home to New Orleans.
WHO DAT!!
