New Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd is likely to plead guilty to Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) for a charge that stems from an incident last summer. Kidd, who had just signed on to play for the New York Knicks at the time, was arrested after he crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a tree in Water Mill, Long Island.
Kidd’s lawyer, Edward Burke Jr., told the New York Daily News, “He will say that the drinks he had that night rendered him intoxicated. What Jason is going to do is stand up and own this.”
The plea deal is likely to have Kidd perform community service. If accepted by a judge, the agreement calls for Kidd to make a number of appearances at schools in Long Island to speak out about drinking and driving. It also calls for Kidd to appear in a number of public service announcements to be taped for use by the District Attorney’s Office.
Kidd is also expected to lose his license for 90 days as a result of the plea.
Lastly, the NBA will also likely hand Kidd a suspension as a result of the incident. Normally a plea to DWI or DUI would result in a player being suspended for two or three games. In this case, with a newly appointed NBA head coach, it is expected that punishment will be handed down from the league.
Still things could have been worse for Kidd as he is lucky that no one was injured in the accident, and that he will be able to get past this without a criminal record which could complicate his coaching career.
