Multiple reports now state that all-star free agent Dwight Howard is headed to the Houston Rockets. The final details of the contract, as well as whether or not it will be a sign and trade with the Lakers, or a straight free agent signing, still need to be worked out, but the final destination has been decided.
The deal can not be completely finalized until July 10th, but for all intents and purposes, it is done; and Howard has made his choice.
Howard gives the Rockets a big man presence inside, and is a great compliment to James Harden’s scoring and slashing ability outside. With the move, the Rockets will have to be considered with other powerhouse NBA West teams such as the Spurs, Clippers, and Thunder.
The Lakers desperately wanted to keep Howard after trading for him last summer, but following a disasterous season in Los Angeles, Howard has choosen to leave them behind.
Howard was widely considered the best NBA free agent available.
The Rockets may need to make some trades in the coming days to free up a little extra cap space if they are going to give Howard, a max deal. On a straight signing he is limited to a four year contract, but via the sign and trade route can get an extra year and a little bit more money.
Howard averaged 17.1 points per game and 12.4 rebounds per game for the Lakers last season. He has averaged 18.3 points, and 12.9 rebounds over his nine year career, the first eight of which were spent with the Orlando Magic.
