Reports are now indicating that Arsenal has finally made the big splash the Board has promised in the transfer market, buying Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain for £22 million. The Argentine International has also been reported to ink a new four year contract to play at the Emirates. The deal has not been officially announced as Higuain still needs to undergo a physical. Other reports indicate the holdup is finding a new manager at Real Madrid to sign off on the purchase.
If the Reports from such places as the DailyMail, goal.com, SkySports, are to be believed, the deal would be the largest transfer in club history. The club’s previous record signing was Andrey Arshavin at £15 million.
Earlier in the week The Guardian reported that Higuain had agreed to a 4 year deal with Arsenal with wages set at £ 130,000 per week.
Higuain gives Arsenal a top notch striker in their attack. Higuain made his debut at Real Madrid in January 2007. In six and a half seasons since joining Arsenal, he has been remarkably consistent, with 107 La Liga goals. Only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo (in less time of course) have scored more goals in Spanish football than Higuain.
Higuain has been rumored to be leaving the Spanish giant for months. Juventus and Napoli were also rumored to be looking to acquire the Argentine International. It appears that Arsenal have beaten their Italian opposition to the punch.
