Quarterback Nick Foles Agrees to Terms with Kansas City Chiefs

Quarterback Nick Foles is about to be reunited with his former coach Andy Reid.

The Kansas City Chiefs came to terms with Foles on a new contract late Wednesday night, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. The 27-year-old had spent the previous season with the now Los Angeles Rams. Foles was released on July 27th and reportedly had offers to join the Cowboys and Vikings.

Foles was originally drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft by the Eagles when Reid was still head coach in Philadelphia. The Arizona product made his first of six starts on November 18th of that year against the Washington Redskins. He would finish his rookie season throwing for 1,699 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.

His second year in the league was particularly noteworthy. After being named starter in Week 6 due to an injury sustained to Michael Vick, Foles would go on an epic tear of mistake free football. He ended the regular season with 27 touchdown passes and a mere two interceptions. That remains the best touchdown to interception ratio in NFL history.

But Foles came back to earth the following season. He started just eight games before breaking his collarbone and being put on season-ending injured reserve. And in the off-season, second year head coach Chip Kelly traded him to the Rams for Sam Bradford.

His lone season in St. Louis was highly ineffectual. After throwing seven touchdowns and ten interceptions in 11 starts, Foles was benched in favor of Case Keenum. His 2015 quarterback rating of 69.0 was second worst among regular starters in the NFL.

The addition of Foles adds experience behind incumbent starter Alex Smith. The other three quarterbacks on the roster are Tyler Bray, Aaron Murray and Kevin Hogan. None have a competitive regular season snap in the league. Bray was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Murray and Hogan were both selected in the fifth round of last year’s draft.

The Chiefs begin preseason play on Saturday, August 13th when they welcome the Seattle Seahawks to Arrowhead Stadium. The game kicks off at 3:30 PM CDT.
