World number one ranked golfer Jason Day closed with a five-under par 67 to finish seven-under par for the tournament at the RBC Canadian Open. After a tough second round, Day was never really in contention to threaten at Glen Abbey, but indicated that he wanted to use the weekend to prepare for the PGA Championship.
Jason Day confident ahead of the PGA Championship
Day was happy with the finish, and talked about it in his post-round media scrum.
“Over the last two days (I’ve gained momentum). I played good today. I hit a lot of quality shots. 18 was a little iffy with the driver, but for the most part, I played good. I hit a lot of good quality shots out there, so I felt much better. The only thing I have to work on is the putter. I didn’t put well this week. I was struggling with the lines.”
Looking Ahead
On what he expects at the PGA, and the greens at Baltusrol, “It will be (different). I think they will have to put a lot of water down. I think that we are expecting 90-plus degree weather. They obviously don’t want to lose the greens. I’m assuming that they are on top of it. I haven’t played the course yet, but from what I’m guessing, I know that its going to be fast.”
“I think so (I can use this as a jumping off point for the second half of the year). The last few times that I’ve played I wasn’t quite driving it the way that I wanted to. Even though I didn’t hit a lot of fairways this week, I hit it solid off the face. I hit it solid off the face. I hit a lot of good shots, kind of exactly what I wanted the ball to do. Especially over the last two days, its given me a lot of confidence heading into next week.”
“I’m hoping that once I get in there, get a rest on Monday, start practicing on Tuesday, I should be good to go.”
Defending the PGA Title
“I look at this tournament as trying to win the PGA. Defending is great, and I won it last year. That’s all I can focus on.” Day continued. “I never really look at it as defending, I want to try and win it again.”
