Late in the first day at the RBC Canadian Open, 309th world ranked Luke List leads the field. The 31-year-old American is currently 115th in the FedEx Cup rankings with a scoring average of 70.689.
Luke List Leads on Day One at the RBC Canadian Open
List got off to a hot start, with a nice approach on the 10th. Left with just under 14 feet to the cup, he made good, moving to one-under.
And then on the par-5 13th, he chipped to within two feet; making his second birdie of what was becoming a great first nine.
But it was his approach on the par-5 15th that earned him the shot of the day. From 122 yards out, List holed it with precision backspin.
Advantage of the Early Tee Off
Conditions at Glen Abbey deteriorated according to many, and List may have taken advantage of an early tee-off time. Several golfers noted wind gusts and incredibly dry conditions as the day went on. But List noted the the par-5s as being the key:
“You have three (par-5s) on the back nine and I was able to do that today, birdieing all the par 5s, so I was happy with that. With my length, I tried to get it in play off the tee and have a smart iron into the par 5s. If I can play them four-under every day all week, that would be great.”
Also known as being a very long hitter, List noted how the conditions were optimal for him to take the opportunity to play the course aggressively.
“The rough is down this year, which makes for if you hit your driver straight, you can take advantage of it and get some wedges out there. The golf course is in phenomenal shape for the rain they have had.”
List finished his round with a 66, going bogey-free on the day. He has the early lead in the 2016 RBC Canadian Open. He has two top-10s this year, and five top-25s. While a long shot to finish atop the leader board come Sunday, he appears to be set up to enjoy a good run on the weekend.
