The Montreal Alouettes revamped offence has its sights on a big game Friday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. With injuries to many offensive threats, the Alouettes have been practising with a new-look attack and are confident about their ability to produce points.
Alouettes Revamped Offence Ready for Battle
Quarterback Kevin Glenn returned from the team’s bye week with an eye infection and has missed all three practices. Rakeem Cato, who earned his job as the back-up in camp, has been taking first-team reps and is expected to play on Friday.
“It looks more like [Cato will start],” said head coach Jim Popp following the team’s practice on Wednesday. “Glenn has not been ruled out. He will be a game-time decision.
“[Cato] has done well right through mini-camp up until now… We won a lot of games with him as the starter last year, and a lot of guys have confidence in him.”
Cato looked good in practice, controlling the offence and making accurate passes. He does not have the luxury of having S.J. Green or Kenny Stafford as his receivers, as both are injured. Players like B.J. Cunningham, and Alex Charette, or even Corbin Louks, who is on the practice roster, are ready to step up to the challenge.
“We feel like we’re a pretty explosive offence… With players stepping up like Cunningham or Louks, we have really good receivers,” said the number one receiver Duron Carter.
“Our offence is looking good, our timing is looking great. I can’t wait to get out there on Friday,” Cunningham added.
With three practices together as a unit, the Alouettes revamped offence is ready for the Ticats.
Carter Excited to Play Hamilton
Carter has not had success against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Twice the Ticats have eliminated Carter and the Alouettes in the playoffs, first in 2013, then again in 2014.
“All my worst CFL moments have been against Hamilton,” Carter said with a smile.
Despite the bad luck, Carter is still excited to play them for the first time since the 2014 playoff game.
“I love playing them, they have a lot of energy. Like Simoni Lawrence, they have a lot of players that play with a lot of heart. It’s always a good game, and I can’t wait to go out there.”
Hamilton has not shown its true colours the past two weeks, losing 28-3 to the B.C. Lions two weeks ago, before losing 28-24 to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
With both teams winless since week one, the game could very well be an exciting one.
