Following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, it is now confirmed that both Manchester clubs in the EPL will be taking the field with new managers next season as Manchester City have fired boss Roberto Mancini one year to the day that he led the squad to their first EPL title, and to the top of English football for the first time in 44 years.
The decision was made after City failed to win a trophy this season, despite having a strong side filled with big money players. The club’s Champions’ League campaign was a disaster, they will finish a distant second to their civic rival Manchester United in the EPL, and on Saturday they lost the FA Cup final to Wigan. Club management has decided that this is a disaster so large, that it requires firing a manager who led the club to glory just 12 months ago.
City management released the following statement:
“Despite everyone’s best efforts, the club has failed to achieve any of its stated targets this year, with the exception of qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League. This, combined with an identified need to develop a holistic approach to all aspects of football at the club, has meant that the decision has been taken to find a new manager for the 2013/14 season and beyond.”
Rumors are already swirling that Malaga boss Manuel Pellegrini will be hired to replace Mancini, however neither the club, nor Pellegrini have yet to confirm those reports.
Mancini was awarded a five year contract after winning the league last season, and has four years remaining on the deal.
Assistant Manager Brian Kidd will take over City for the last two games of the EPL season, and will lead the squad on their summer tour of North America, at least until the permanent replacement is named.
