Tamira Paszek strives to return to Top 30

Now just inside the World’s Top 120, Tamira Paszek is focused on returning to the greater heights that she once experienced several years ago. It is no secret that Paszek has great adoration for the grass court surfaces in the United Kingdom, and that was evident back in 2012. In her breakout year as a WTA player Paszek won the biggest title of her young career and successfully announced herself on the biggest stage of women’s tennis when she won the Eastbourne title four years ago. Paszek would take the greatest form of her career and make the second Grand Slam quarter-final of her career, beating some great players along the way–Caroline Wozniacki, Alize Cornet, and Roberta Vinci amongst many.

The three-time WTA title winner would eventually rise inside the Top 30 in the early stages of 2013 but it would be a year to forget for the Austrian. The worrying signs were evident when Paszek’s poor form continued throughout the grass season – including losing the first round of Eastbourne to Caroline Wozniacki. Injuries played an integral part in the rise and fall of Paszek’s career. In 2009, Paszek was suffering with a career-threatening back injury, which helped put things into perspective in the latter years of her career. Her poor results in 2013, which contributed to Paszek falling from No.26 in the world to No.181, can be attributed to her bout with mononucleosis in the early periods of that year. Between January and June of 2013, Paszek had not won a single competitive match of tennis – having torn her left adductor muscle in that year.

The World No. 119 is now building some momentum into her favourite portion of the season, having made quarterfinal appearances in an ITF event in Eastbourne and another in Nottingham last week, we could be seeing the development of the next significant rise in Tamira Paszek’s career. The relevance of her grass court results cannot be understated – picking up fantastic wins over good grass court players like Ashleigh Barty and Magdalena Rybarikova.

Tamira Paszek qualified for the main draw at Birmingham this week with a qualifying win over Anna Tatishvili. She will play Tara Moore in the first round on Tuesday.
