Ronda Rousey may be away from the Octagon for even longer than expected, as the former UFC women’s bantamweight champion underwent minor knee surgery on Wednesday. The surgery will keep Rousey out of the UFC at least until December, which is when UFC president, Dana White, would like to see her fight again.
“If she fights, I’m hoping she fights in December.” White said. “If not, then she would probably fight at the New vYear’s show at the beginning of the year.”
Ronda Rousey Undergoes Knee Surgery
Rousey has not fought in the UFC since she lost the title to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November of last year in Melbourne, Australia. Holm then lost the title to the current champion, Miesha Tate, in her first title defense just four months later.
“If Miehsa Tate’s still the champion, she’ll fight Miesha Tate. Whoever has the belt is who Ronda Rousey will fight.”
White also spoke about that possibility that Rousey’s return fight could be a rematch with Holm instead of a rubber match with Tate.
“Injuries happen in this sport and a fight is made. Somebody falls out and somebody else slides in,” White said. “I’m not even saying Holly Holm couldn’t be the champion by the time Ronda comes back. So, whoever holds that belt when Ronda’s ready.”
But Rousey may be content to stay away from the Octagon for awhile, as she is having a successful career without fighting; appearing in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue, hosting Saturday Night Live and even appearing in the upcoming remake of Road House.
