Liverpool Confirm Loris Karius Deal

Liverpool have today confirmed the signing of Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius.

The 22-year-old Germany U21 international completed a medical on Monday and has now put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Reds reported to have paid £4.7 million to bring the goalkeeper to Anfield.

Karius looks likely to be Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice goalkeeper next season and will wear the vacant number one jersey, which leaves a question mark over the future of Simon Mignolet on Merseyside.

The German, who once had a spell at Manchester City, had largely impressed between the sticks at Mainz where he made nearly a century of appearances and was voted second-best Bundesliga goalkeeper behind Manuel Neuer by his fellow professionals in his homeland this season.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, Karius said of the move:

“They have a special history and the fans are amazing here, so I look forward to playing at Anfield.

“I know a lot about the club from watching them on TV. The history, everybody who plays football knows. There a lot of things in my head when I think of this club.

“I spoke to the manager and I had a good feeling afterwards because he told me what he wants to do with the club and with the players.

“It was a good talk with him and after that I was convinced this was the right decision.”

Karius is Klopp’s third arrival at Anfield this summer after Joel Matip and Marko Grujic agreed to move to the club in January.

Other goalkeepers on the books at Liverpool include Adam Bogdan, who could be on his way out after been deemed surplus to requirements, while young stopper Danny Ward looks set to join Championship side Huddersfield Town on a season-long loan.
