Evgeni Malkin Injured for 6-8 Weeks
Malkin, who was injured in a collision with defenseman Dalton Prout, was only able to play a grand total of 8:59 in the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night at Nationwide Arena. During the short time he was on the ice for the Penguins he was able to pick up two assists, had a +/- 1, and average shift of 49 seconds and 3:08 of TOI on the powerplay.
This will come as a big blow to the Penguins, who currently sit eighth spot, or final wild card spot, of the playoff picture with just 15 games left to play for them. They currently sit at 35-24-8, a single point behind the other wild card team, the Detroit Red Wings, with one less game played than Detroit.
Malkin is second on the Penguins roster in points with 58 on the season, with 27 goals and 31 assists during the 2015-16 season. This will come as a big blow to the Penguins down the stretch as they are obviously in the thick of a very close playoff hunt between many teams, including Detroit, both New York teams, Philadelphia, and Carolina as well.
Malkin was the 2nd overall pick of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. During his nine-plus seasons with the organization he has racked up 295 goals and 465 assists for a total of 760 career points, as well as 111 career playoff points in 101 games.
