UFC 196 featured two tremendous upsets on Saturday night; the first came in the co-main event when Tate defeated Holm for the women’s title in a spectacular fifth round submission of the champion. Tate was on a four-fight winning streak going into the title match, with her only UFC losses coming from former champion Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano. Tate was very vocal going into the title fight that she was a bad match-up stylistically for Holm, and would likely rely on her superior wrestling to win the fight. With her victory of Holm, Tate picked up her seventh submission win and became the third women’s bantamweight champion in UFC history. Tate is now slated to meet Rousey later this year, in what will be the third match between the two. Rousey won both of their previous bouts via armbar.
The second major upset of the evening came when Diaz submitted McGregor via rear-naked choke in the second round of their bout. The loss to Diaz was McGregor’s first in the UFC, and was the third submission loss of his career.
