The NFL is a smorgasbord of awesome storylines. Some are analytical, others are critical, and some are just down right stupid. It’s the stupid ones I live for – they make my day. Welcome to Quick Slant.
Like you, I peruse headlines and tickers in search of the stories written by credible writers who have some form of credentials and at least a few real “inside sources”. After all, the NFL is a serious business requiring serious reporting. I also like to have a little fun, which is why I created Quick Slant. At its core, this column is my way of sharing with you the headlines from around the NFL that I feel are most interesting. I try to offer my own take on the story in as few words as possible – some of us have a wife, kids and a job and don’t have time to read 5000+ word novels! So, without further ado, I give you today’s version of Quick Slant:
Michael Vick is in the news – again. The former dog fighting ring organizer turn advocate, wrote an autobiography about his childhood in Virginia and 18-month time in prison. Apparently some people aren’t buying it (the book, nor his story) and uttered threats towards him and the store he was appearing at to sign books. He instead appeared at a church and donated all profits to helping young men in prison to turn their lives around. Assuming you believe in the justice system, it’s time to move on……Matt Forte, and in fairness 98.4% (give or take) of all fans, think the proposed rule to penalize running backs for lowering their helmet to deliver a blow is absolutely absurd. Can you imagine what Larry Csonka, Jim Brown or Jerome Bettis would say if this were proposed in their day? Revolt!……OL Jake Long has left the Dolphins for the St. Louis Rams? Why? Simple – the baby back ribs……It’s not only because I dislike Joe Flacco (but partly is) that I think his contract is beyond ridiculous. For whatever reason, people are still discussing how his contract has resulted in players leaving Baltimore. Uh, “duh”! Anyone could see it from a mile away! Joe Flacco’s deal has screwed the Ravens – looks good on them……I’d love to talk to Cleveland Browns fans and remind that Freddy Kruger (real name Paul) does not walk on water, like many believe. Is he a nice lineman? Of course. Can he turn water into wine? No, not that I’m aware of……I’ll leave you with Red Skins news. Apparently Washington management was asking the league to overlook the $18million in cap room they penalized the team for their mismanagement in 2010. Apparently Roger Goodell & co. are still laughing.
That does it for today. Check back tomorrow and I’ll have sifted through the day’s headlines and give you what you need to know.
