Eugenie Bouchard Falls in WTA Hobart Final

It was a tough day at the office for Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard yesterday, after falling to Alize Cornet 6-1, 6-2 to win the Hobart International.

After completing a disappointing year in 2015, Bouchard went into the Hobart International with hopes of claiming her first WTA title of the season. Unfortunately, Cornet played through Australia’s windy conditions to break Bouchard’s tournament streak, taking home her first WTA title since April 2014.

Bouchard admitted that the weather and her emotions got the better of her during an interview with CTV News, in which she stated that her match against Cornet “was a tough one for me [Bouchard]… I just wasn’t on top of my game.” The Canadian also revealed that she struggled to maintain her focus throughout the match after learning of some family issues that were taking place back home. “To be honest, I woke up and just had family issues back at home and things like that and I couldn’t keep my focus,” Bouchard said.

Bouchard committed 16 unforced errors and landed a measly 43% of her serves to hand Elize Cornet the victory.

Cornet will play Bojana Jovanovski in the first round of the Australian Open, and hopes to re-establish her dominance after coming off of a much needed WTA win against Bouchard.

Fortunately, the young Canadian will be following in the steps of Cornet by seeking redemption at the Australian Open next week.
