Orioles re-sign Chris Davis

After a drama filled off-season, the Baltimore Orioles have re-signed their top slugger.  Reports indicate that the team and first baseman/outfielder Chris Davis have agreed on a seven year, $161 million contract. The deal reportedly includes a full no-trade clause, but does not include an opt-out.  The deal is pending a physical.  MLB Network’s Jon Heyman was first with the news.

Davis, 29, has been with the Orioles since 2011. He belted 47 home runs with 117 RBIs last year and has 126 home runs in the past three seasons. The left handed slugger had a slash line of .262/.361/.562 last season. In his career he has hit 203 home runs and has a slash line of .255/.330/.506.  He plays the majority of his games at first base, but can play the outfield from time to time.

The Orioles have now re-signed three of their big four free agents this off-season, keeping Matt Wieters, Darren O’Day and Davis. They did lose starter Wei-Yin Chen to the Miami Marlins.

Earlier in the week it had been reported that the Orioles had moved on from Davis after he rejected a seven year, $154 million offer from the club.  The team was said to be in pursuit of slugger Yoenis Cespedes as a replacement.  It appears that the Orioles were ultimately able to sweeten their offer to their slugger, and the two sides reached an agreement.
