According to FOX baseball insider Ken Rosenthal, the Detroit Tigers weren’t interested in outfielder Gerardo Parra, but they are, however, interested in his new teammate, Carlos Gonzalez. On Tuesday, Parra reportedly agreed to a three-year, $26 million with the Colorado Rockies.
As of now, the Tigers are among a few teams talking with the Rockies about their left-handed outfielders, Rosenthal reports. Those outfielders include Gonzalez, Corey Dickerson, and Charlie Blackmon.
The Tigers target outfielder is unclear, Rosenthal said, and no deal is close.
The Tigers are still evaluating their options in left field. This offseason, they traded for Cameron Maybin, and currently have a timeshare set up between Anthony Gose and Tyler Collins. Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has not yet committed to either Maybin or Gose in left field.
Gonzalez, 30, is considered a superstar player. This past season, he hit .271 with forty home runs, and won his second National League Silver Slugger Award. He is also a two-time All Star and is currently due $17 million this upcoming season and $20 million in 2017.
Dickerson, 26, hit .304 in 2015. Blackmon, 28, hit .287 with seventeen home runs with forty-three stolen bases. Dickerson is under team control through 2019, while Blackmon is in his first year of arbitration.
Colorado Rockies Carlos Gonzalez understands that his time with the Rockies could soon be coming to an end.
Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich has reportedly received numerous calls from teams looking to make a deal.
“He needs to make moves,” Gonzalez told MLB.com’s Thomas Harding of Bridich. “I’m not going to get in the middle of that. If he has to move me or move anybody else for the best of the team, he needs to go ahead and do the best job he can as a GM.
“I’m on the Rockies, and he’s the GM, and that’s what I know. That’s the way I see it. That’s the way I handle it. No, he could have called me five seconds later (referring to a call Bridich made to him regarding the acquisition of Parra) and said We traded you, and all I can say is, OK, I got traded. That’s part of the job.”
The oft-injured slugger is coming off a career year in which he hit .271/.325/.540 with forty home runs, twenty-five doubles, and ninety-seven RBIs, while claiming his second Silver Slugger Award.
The Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles are among the teams that have been linked to the Rockies since the Parra deal was reported early Tuesday.
