The Detroit Lions have tapped Bob Quinn to be their next general manager. Quinn was New England’s director of pro scouting before being named Lions GM. The move comes after the Lions fired general manager Martin Mayhew and team president Tom Lewand earlier this season. The Lions had a disappointing 7-9 record in the 2015 season.
The Detroit Free Press reports The Detroit Lions have a new general manager, one with a championship resume and a decade’s worth of experience as a pro and college scout. Quinn is the New England Patriots’ director of pro scouting and played a role in assembling Super Bowl team.
Quinn, 39, was a regional college scout for four years and national scout for one before taking the role of assistant director of pro personnel in 2009. New England has won four super bowls since Quinn joined the organization in 2000, and made two other appearances in the big game.
Quinn was one of three candidates to interview with the Lions for the vacant job in recent days. Interim general manager Sheldon White and New York Giants assistant general manager Kevin Abrams were also interviewed.
In 2012 Quinn was promoted to director of pro scouting for the Patriots. Quinn is known for his work ethic and dedication throughout the league. Quinn earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Connecticut, where he also served as graduate assistant in the football office and equipment office.
One of Quinn’s first big decision will be, who will be the Lions head coach in 2016. Current head coach Jim Caldwell is 18-14 in his first two season with the Lions and has two years remaining on his current contract.
