Friday Morning, the Dallas Stars agreed to a five-year deal with general manager Jim Nill.  The contract extension comes during the midst of the Dallas Stars best start in franchise history (62 points in 43 games) .

The Stars enter Friday in first placed the Western Conference and trailing the Washington Capitals by one point for the President’s Trophy lead.

“I’ve said over and over again, just how special of a group we have here in Dallas, and developing and maintaining a winning organization is something I look forward to over the next seven years,” Nill said to NHL.com.

Nill has two years left on his current deal, following this season with the Stars before the deal kicks in for the 2018-19 season. The deal will run through the 2022-2023 season.

Dallas Stars Acquisitions Under Jim Nill

Jim Nill was hired by the Dallas Stars in April 2013.  His first move was hiring Lindy Ruff as head coach. He has pulled quite a few blockbuster trades since.

In his first summer, he acquired centre Tyler Seguin along with Rich Peverley and Ryan Button from the Bruins for Loui Eriksson, Reilly Smith, Joe Morrow and Matt Fraser.

He has created a very strong offensive tandem in Dallas by adding Seguin up the middle for Jamie Benn who has won the Art Ross since playing alongside Seguin. The two are currently second and third in NHL scoring.

He then added another offensive piece in the 2014 summer by acquiring centre Jason Spezza and Ludwig Karlsson from the Senators for Alex Chaisson, Nick Paul, Alex Guptill and a second rounder in the 2015 draft.

Last summer, he traded defenceman  Trevor Daley and forward Ryan Garbutt to the Chicago Blackhawks for aging sniper Patrick Sharp and defenceman Stephen Johns.

“From the day he stepped into this role, he has displayed tremendous decision-making in the re-tooling of our group and we’re excited to build upon the foundation that has been laid. We feel he is one of the best general managers in our League and we are thrilled he is so committed to us.” said Stars owner Tom Gaglardi to the league’s website.

Prior to being hired by the Stars, Nill spent 19 years with the Detroit Red Wings, contributing in four Stanley Cup Championships. He spent 15 years as assistant general manger of the Wings.
