Trevor Daley’s ill-filled tenure with the Chicago Blackhawks came to an end Monday night as he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Rob Scuderi.
Scuderi, 36, has played in 25 games with the Penguins this season, amassing four assists and a plus/minus rating of +4. In 745 career NHL games split between Pittsburgh as well as the Los Angeles Kings, the Syosset, NY native has put up 104 points (8G, 96A) over 12 seasons. He brings a veteran presence to Chicago’s defensive lineup with two Stanley Cup championships to go along with it (2009 with PIT, 2012 with LAK).
Despite the fact that his Corsi (46.6%) and Fenwick (48.0%) ratings have taken a significant hit this season, general manager Stan Bowman has decided to take a chance on Scuderi due to Chicago’s recent salary cap woes. Pittsburgh is planning on retaining 1/3 of Scuderi’s cap hit of $3.375 million, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie among others around the league.
Daley, 32, suited up in 29 games with Chicago this season and registered nine assists with a +1 rating. He was acquired by the Blackhawks in the offseason from the Dallas Stars along with Ryan Garbutt for Patrick Sharp and prospect Stephen Johns. The Toronto-born blueliner’s role had been diminished recently as he played on the third defensive pairing along with David Rundblad against the Vancouver Canucks Sunday night. It was also rumored that Stan Bowman had begun to throw his name out on the trading block as early as the first week of the regular season.
Trevor Daley’s current contract will expire at the end of the 2016-2017 season with a cap hit of $3.3 million.
