According to a cbssports.com report, Mike Pelfrey is on the verge of signing a two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers. The New York Post reports that the deal is worth $16 million over two seasons, which is the same amount that Pelfrey earned in three seasons with the Minnesota Twins.
Pelfrey, 31, signed a one-year contract with the Twins in December 2012 and later agreed to a two-year extension the following winter. In 64 starts for the Twins, Pelfrey compiled a 11-27 record while posting a 4.94 ERA. This past season saw Pelfrey go 6-11 with a 4.26 ERA in 30 starts, which apparently wasn’t good enough for the Twins to resign him.
Before Pelfrey made his way to Minnesota, he was a former first-round pick of the New York Mets. When Pelfrey arrived in Minnesota in 2012, he was less than a year removed from undergoing elbow ligament reconstruction surgery, and went just 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA in 29 starts. And in 2014, Pelfrey suffered nerve irritation in his elbow and a groin injury that cost him most of the season.
The Twins have several pitching candidates for the rotation returning in 2016, which also factored into the Twins decision not to resign Pelfrey. He knew however, that his days in Minnesota were over, “They haven’t said anything, and I can count. I know they’ve got a lot of guys for the rotation,” Pelfrey said.
Three members of the Twins 2015 roster remain available in free-agency, all of whom are pitchers: right handed Blaine Boyer and left handers Neal Cotto and Brian Duensing.
Mike Pelfrey is the second free-agent starting pitcher to sign with the Detroit Tigers in the past week. Former Washington Nationals ace, Jordan Zimmerman, signed a five-year $110 million deal.
Mike Pelfrey has a 61-81 record with a 4.52 ERA for his career (2006-2015). He spent his first seven years with the New York Mets, where he compiled a 50-54 record with a 4.36 ERA. And in his last three seasons with Minnesota, he went 11-27 with a 4.94 ERA.
