Alex Anthopoulos Turns Down Extension, Expected to Leave Jays

Toronto Blue Jays General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is expected to be leaving the club after turning down a contract extension offer. According to Shi Davidi (Sportsnet), Anthopoulos’s departure from the Jays organization is not due to a financial issue.

It has come as a surprise to many fans that Alex Anthopoulos would make the decision to leave the Blue Jays so early after their post season elimination at the hands of the Kansas City Royals. There’s no doubt that both sides had a reasonable amount of time to work out a deal, so the two parties have caught everybody off guard.

With Alex Anthopoulos leaving the team, it is safe to assume that Jays Manager John Gibbons will be the next to go. Anthopoulos and Gibbons remained close through their time with Toronto, and were both expected to stay with the club after completing a breakthrough season that led them to the American League Championship Series.

The Blue Jays were 489-483 under Anthopoulos since he came into play in 2009. Anthopoulos made a name for himself in Toronto when he dealt for Josh Donaldson, Troy Tulowitzki, and David Price this past season. These three players were the backbone of the Toronto Blue Jays playoff run.

It is still unknown as to whether Anthopoulos will be moving to another organization or if he will be taking a break from Major League Baseball.
