According to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport, defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul visited the New York Giants at their team facility on Monday. This is Pierre-Paul’s second in-season checkup with the Giants since his accident on July 4.
This is the first time the Giants have seen Pierre-Paul since his last checkup on Labor Day. At that time, both the medical staff and Giants officials determined that Pierre-Paul was nowhere near ready for football activities after having his right index finger amputated, along with the top portion of his right thumb.
As of right now, both the New York Giants and Pierre-Paul are under a bit of a deadline. Pierre-Paul has until November 17 to sign the Giants one-year, $14.8 million franchise tender. If Pierre-Paul does not sign before that date, he’ll be required by league rules to sit out the remainder of the season. And if the Giants decide to rescind the tender, then Pierre-Paul will become an unrestricted free agent.
The original franchise tender of $14.8 million no longer exists however. Pierre-Paul has missed the first seven games of the season, which means that the maximum worth of the tender is now only $8.7 million – a salary the Giants would likely try to reduce. If Pierre-Paul signs the tender, the Giants could move him to the non-football injury list, a designation that could save the Giants millions.
Despite the New York Giants sitting atop the NFC East at 4-3, their defense could use a healthy Jason Pierre-Paul. During his first five years in the NFL, Pierre-Paul established himself as one of the leagues premium pass rushers, recording 42 sacks over that span.
