Kansas City Chiefs Pro-Bowl safety Eric Berry, had his first interception since his return from battling cancer.
Eric Berry was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma last December, ending his football season and putting his career in real doubt. Thankfully it was caught in time and with the right treatment, Berry was able to beat this dreadful disease.
When the Kansas City Chiefs’ players reported for training camp this season, Eric Berry was among them. He had been cleared to resume football activities by the medical staff, to the excitement of his teammates and the fans.
This is what the Chiefs owner, Clark Hunt, had to say about Berry’s battle back in August: “It was really hard to know because cancer is such a tough disease,” Hunt said at the start of training camp. “Our thoughts were really with him and just getting healthy. Not so much by getting healthy and playing football. But, when he showed up last week and Eric was cleared to play football, it was a huge lift for everybody associated with the organization. I can really sense the players feeding off his strength and his leadership.”
Meanwhile, Berry’s teammate, tight-end Travis Kelce, was probably not as surprised by Berry’s quick return to the NFL after working out with him during the offseason. This is what Kelce had to say to CBS Sports Insider Jason LA Canfora about his offseason workout with Berry.
“I was just trying to keep up with the guy,” Kelce said. “EB is superhuman, even Superman doesn’t have anything on Eric Berry, man. That guy is – you can’t say enough good things about him. It’s good just to have him back as a brother, but also as a leader and a football player. It’s good to have him back in good spirits and everybody back on the same page, lighting up the atmosphere a little bit.”
So it’s no surprise that Berry is out on the field making plays like the one he made today. His interception setup a Charcandrick West rushing touchdown, giving the Chiefs a 16-3 lead against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which they ultimately ended up winning 23-13. This was a crucial victory for the Chiefs (2-5) as they try and salvage their season.
