This season, Last Word on Sports will be keeping you up to date on the Arsenal players out on loan, as they continue to develop their skills and prove they are ready to compete for a place in the Arsenal side. There are currently twelve players out on loan from Arsenal.
The players away on loan are:
- Wojciech Szczęsny (GK), on loan to AS Roma in Serie A
- Carl Jenkinson (RB), on loan to West Ham United in the Premier League
- Yaya Sanogo (ST), on loan to Ajax in the Eredivisie
- Serge Gnabry (MID), on loan to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League
- Ainsley Maitland-Niles (MID), on loan to Ipswich Town in the Championship
- Isaac Hayden (CB/MID), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
- Chuba Akpom (ST), on loan to Hull City in the Championship
- Daniel Crowley (MID), on loan to Barnsley in League One
- Jon Toral (MID), on loan to Birmingham City in the Championship
- Emiliano Martínez (GK), on loan to Wolves in the Championship
- Wellington Silva (MID), on loan to Bolton in the Championship
- Gedion Zelalem (MID), on loan to Rangers in the Scottish Championship
Coming back from the international break, it was another up and down weekend for Arsenal players out on loan. The only real stand-out came in the West Ham game, which saw another goal for Carl Jenkinson. Only six of the 12 players on loan made appearances for their club this weekend, with Jenkinson the only man to really shine.
Wojciech Szczęsny picked up another win for Roma in a 3-1 victory over Empoli. Szczęsny did make five saves, but was unable to keep the clean sheet. Empoli’s goal came in the 75th minute from Marcel Büchel. Szczęsny actually managed to get a hand on the ball, and perhaps should have kept it out, but was unable to turn it wide of the post.
Carl Jenkinson had a roller coaster first half for West Ham in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace. The Arsenal man scored for the second consecutive game in the 22nd minute, then went down the other end and conceded a penalty to allow the equalising goal as 25 minutes chimed. The goal was the fortunate result of a perfectly timed run to get in behind the Palace defence, allowing Jenkinson to score the opener. It was an overall strong performance from Jenkinson, who completed 90 per cent of his passes, missing only four; all of which were long clearances down field. He was also tidy in defence, winning two interceptions, seven clearances, and a block.
Yaya Sanogo again did not feature for Ajax. With reports coming last week that the club could be set to terminate Sanogo’s loan early, things do not appear to be improving for the struggling striker.
Serge Gnabry also continued his disappointing streak of not appearing for West Brom, who beat Sunderland on Saturday.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles played 83 minutes as Ipswich drew 0-0 against Huddersfield Town. Maitland-Niles was dangerous in attack, setting up three chances and completing 50 per cent of his attempted rivalries successfully. Unfortunately, none of these resulted in a goal as Ipswich drew for their third game in four.
Isaac Hayden did not play in Hull City’s 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday. Chuba Akpom came on in the 51st minute with the score already 1-1, though, but was unable to break the deadlock. Akpom was unimpressive, completing just two of his four attempted passes and failing to put a shot on target.
Daniel Crowley did not play, as Barnsley fell 2-1 to Southend.
Jon Toral was on the bench but did not play, as Birmingham won 2-1 against QPR.
Emiliano Martínez started again for Wolves, who lost 4-2 to Derby. Martínez could probably have done better on Derby’s second goal; a header from Chris Martin arose, after he’d beaten Martínez to an aerial ball in the box. The goalkeeper perhaps should have won the ball in this instance, though. The Arsenal man was hardly at fault for the other three goals, though no keeper enjoys conceding four. Martínez did generate one highlight for Wolves, saving a first-half penalty attempt.
Wellington Silva started and went 83 minutes for Bolton in their 2-0 loss to Burnley. It was Bolton’s fifth fixture straight without a win, and Wellington may have left the pitch feeling he should have produced more. The winger did complete 90 per cent of his passes and manage four shots, though, but failed to place a single ball on target.
Gedion Zelalem missed out on Rangers’ 2-1 win against Queen of the South. Zelalem didn’t participate in the last couple games for the United States U-23 team in their Olympic Qualifying tournament due a knock, so that could have been what additionally kept him out for Rangers.
