A busy 2015 CFL trade deadline has come and gone and many big names are changing postal codes. This morning, the Riders made the first of two trades of their day when they dealt veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn to Montreal.
Messam to Stamps, Crapigna to Riders
The more significant of the two trades came this afternoon when Canadian running back Jerome Messam was dealt to the Calgary Stampeders in exchange for kicker Tyler Crapigna and a third round pick in the 2016 CFL Draft. Messam has 826 yards of rushing- good enough for second in the league- and 464 yards of receiving.
The following is the press release from the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have traded national running back Jerome Messam and the fifth round selection in the 2016 CFL Draft acquired earlier in the day to the Calgary Stampeders in exchange for national kicker Tyler Crapigna, a 3rd round selection in the 2016 CFL Draft, and the rights to a negotiation list player.
Crapigna (5’7” – 166) was originally drafted by the Stampeders in the fifth round (40th overall) in the 2014 CFL Draft. The McMaster product graduated as the CIS all-time leader in field goals with 84.
Mike Edem to Hamilton
The latter of the two late-day trades involved the Alouettes and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Montreal sent national defensive back Mike Edem to the East-division leading Ti-Cats for a sixth round pick in 2016 and a conditional seventh round pick in 2017. Edem has been left on the bench for much of 2015 and has been limited to special teams. This is a smart move for Hamilton regarding their national/international starter ratio.
The press release from the CFL.ca staff is below.
HAMILTON — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have added national depth to their defence, acquiring third-year DB Mike Edem from the Montreal Alouettes in exchange for a sixth round pick in the 2016 CFL Draft and a conditional seventh round pick in 2017.
Edem, 26, has played in four games with Montreal in 2015, collecting three special teams tackles. The 6-1, 200-pound native of Lagos, Nigeria, has appeared in 39 career CFL regular season games (16 starts) and three playoff games, all with the Alouettes. Edem has accumulated 54 tackles, 25 special teams tackels, five sacks, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries in his three-year CFL career.
In his rookie season in 2013, Edem collected 49 defensive tackles, nine special teams tackles, five sacks, three interceptions and three fumble recoveries. For his efforts, he was named an East Division All-Star and the Alouettes Most Outstanding Rookie and Most Outstanding Canadian.
After stints in the CIS with McGill (2009) and Calgary (2011-12), Edem was selected by the Alouettes in the first round, third overall, in the 2013 CFL Draft.
The 2015 CFL trade deadline passed today at 4pm Eastern Time.
