The FIFA Ethics Committee announced today that they have suspended the organisation’s President, Sepp Blatter, for 90 days.

Sepp Blatter Suspended by FIFA Ethics Committee

It has been reported that the committee’s investigatory chamber requested the suspension earlier this week, and announced it today.

The decision comes after recent investigations and heightened pressure on Blatter regarding the corruption scandal that has come to an apex at FIFA. Blatter announced he would step down months ago, however, he retracted his resignation soon after; Blatter now appears certain that his resignation would not be “in the best interest of Fifa” (quote via Blatter’s spokesperson, as stated at deadline.com). Last week, several of FIFA’s most prolific sponsors, including Coca Cola, Visa, Budweiser and McDonald’s, announced their request for the President to leave his post. The corporations voiced their concerns that Blatter’s actions have tarnished the reputation of international football’s governing body, and damaged FIFA’s relationship with their companies.

There are many details not yet clear, and the suspension is noted as “provisional”. Further information will surely come in the next few hours and days. Continue to check back here at LWOS for updates as they are released.
