Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith, Sr. has four broken ribs and is considered day-to-day.
Smith was injured late in the third quarter of the Ravens 23-20 Thursday night overtime victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh defenders Antwon Blake and Lawrence Timmons combined on the hit that ultimately caused the injury.
The initial diagnosis of Steve Smith’s back was a contusion, but a more recent exam turned up significant damage, according to the National Football Post. The availability of the Ravens star wide receiver will all depend on Steve Smith’s tolerance for pain.
The exact diagnosis of Steve Smith’s injury has yet to be disclosed by the Ravens, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Steve Smith’s ribs are broken.
“I’m told it’s actually four broken ribs, which is considered a short-term injury because…well because Steve Smith.”
The 2015 NFL season is to be Steve Smith’s last, and he even acknowledged after the game against the Steelers that he’s beginning to feel the effects of a life-long career in football. “It’s probably the first time in my career I feel like I’m 36,” he said. “I’m trying to get through to tomorrow. I’m trying to make it to the airplane.”
With the Ravens rookie first-round pick Breshad Perriman out indefinitely after suffering a setback in training camp with a knee injury, and now with Steve Smith being out for the foreseeable future, the Ravens were forced to make a move on Saturday.
The Ravens acquired four-year veteran wide receiver Chris Givens in a trade with the St. Louis Rams, to help with their injury depleted receiving corps.
