Texans Name Ryan Mallet Starter

After just one week, the Houston Texans will make a move at quarterback. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, The Houston Texans will name Ryan Mallet their new starting quarterback.

Brian Hoyer started the game under center in the Texans Week 1 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. After going 18-of-34 for 236 yards, with a touchdown and an interception, he was pulled from the game by head coach Bill O’Brien. Mallet looked significantly more impressive after coming in relief, going 8-of-13 passing for 98 yards and a touchdown. He made things a lot more interesting, with the Texans falling just short, 27-20, in their comeback attempt.

The move shouldn’t come as a surprise. Head Coach Bill O’Brien said, “we’re all on a short leash,” when naming Hoyer starter before the season began. Knowing head coach Bill O’Brien, it won’t be the first or the last time the Texans make changes to the starting job. To be honest, neither Brian Hoyer or Ryan Mallet has looked particularly reliable as an option for the starting role prior to the season.

Mallet hurt his chances of winning the job, and ultimately lost out to Hoyer, following a well publicized incident where he was late for a team practice. The team sent him home that day, and it has taken him a while to get back into Bill O’Brien’s good books.
