Today, in what Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation called, “the biggest philanthropic commitment by a sports figure in Canadian history”, the hospital and Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban announced he will be donating $10 million of his annual salary over the next seven years to the hospital.

The announcement also includes the naming of the atrium at Glen Yards “Atrium P.K. Subban”, which has already been displayed on the wall. Subban, 26, signed an eight year, $72 million dollar contract with the Canadiens last summer. He is currently a candidate for the captaincy in Montreal, along with Max Pacioretty and other players. Subban has been active in charity since he entered the National Hockey League. Along with his family, he has worked as an ambassador for Hyundai Hockey Helpers, providing registration fees and gift cards for equipment to 1,000 hockey players 18 years and younger. Back in August, he donated royalties to the Breast Cancer Society of Canada.

Back in July, Subban gave prizes provided by Gatorade to those taking part in the Success Beyond Limits summer camp after they defeated Americans organized and supported by Pharrell Williams in Jeopardy trivia. Subban also participated with fellow NHLPA players in the RBC Charity Challenge, among other charities.
“We have a nature of giving back already. That starts with my father as a principal and my mother supporting five kids at home. We’ve always had this mentality of helping others before we help ourselves,” said Subban, back at the Hyundai Hockey Helpers event.
