Drake @ South Dakota Preview

How they stack up

The Bulldogs enter this weekend’s game receiving votes in the STATS FCS Top 25, following a close loss to scholarship school, North Dakota. Drake started off the season with a win over D-2 program, William Jewell. The Coyotes on the other hand, opened with Kansas State and were shutout 34-0. They picked up their only win on the year against UC Davis last week.

The Last Time Out

Drake and South Dakota played in 2009 in Vermillion where USD beat the Bulldogs 51-21. The Bulldogs lead the all time series 11-6.

The Rice Bowl

QB, Andy Rice has been the center piece of the Drake Bulldog offense so far this season. The fifth-year senior has thrown for 521 yards, three touchdowns, and just one interception. USD held UC Davis to 60 yards rushing last Saturday, so Rice could be called on to step up.

The Running Back Battle

During the preseason, media and analysts raved about the running back combo Drake had in Conley Wilkins and Gary Scott. However, Wilkins is the only back making noise at the moment, rushing for 146 yards and four touchdowns on the year. Scott finds himself in the rear view, not yet gaining a net total of 50 yards. The two should hit USD with a unique offense in having two backs, but Scott must turn his season around in order to bring home a W for Drake.

Two Bulldogs come off POTW awards

Both Linebacker, John Hugunin, and Punter, Cam Bohnert earned Pioneer Football League Player of the Week honors in their respective positions. Hugunin had 2.5 tackles for a loss, with one being for a safety, last week. He even added two forced fumbles. Bohnert punted 11 times for 438 yards – a school record.
