Hello all! Fantasy baseball can be hard, especially with all of the pitching injuries that occur in a year. With that in mind, streaming pitchers can be a viable strategy, even with the risk involved. That’s why I look at splits to minimize the risk and determine the best two starters in any given day that are owned in less than half of fantasy baseball leagues. Here are your streaming pitchers for Friday, July 31!
Streaming Pitchers: 7/31/2015
David Phelps – MIA (vs. SD)
David Phelps has been pretty effective since coming to Miami from the Yankees in the Eovaldi trade. He’s had solid results, with 6.10 K/9, 2.51 BB/9, and a ground ball rate of 42.9%. His ERA and FIP are 3.86 and 3.71, respectively. With his HR/FB rate sitting at a measly 7.3%, one might be concerned about too much good luck in those ERA and FIP numbers (his xFIP sits at 4.19, and his SIERA is at 4.29). However, with pitching half his games in Miami, his HR/FB rate might be able to sit a little low, as Miami is one of the better pitcher’s parks in the league. He’s a great matchup play at home, then, and his next matchup looks pretty good for him too. The Padres are coming in to Miami, and they have an 84 wRC+ on the road and an 87 wRC+ against righties. There’s no reason to think that Phelps should have any problem with this matchup.
Tommy Milone – MIN (vs. SEA)
Don’t look at Tommy Milone’s last two starts. Please, just don’t. They’re some painful lines. The worst part is, before those two starts, Milone had a pretty good run going on. From June 12 to July 8, Milone had 7.38 K/9, 2.31 BB/9, and a ground ball rate of 40.2%. With an ERA/FIP/xFIP line of 1.62/2.53/3.60 during that stretch, you can see just how effective he was. I’m focusing on those stats, along with a great matchup at home against the Mariners on Friday. The M’s have an 85 wRC+ on the road and a 93 wRC+ against lefties. If you can focus on the positive, Milone has a good start ahead of him here.
