Callum Wilson: Remain with Bournemouth and Prosper

Fairly recently, I wrote an introductory article regarding AFC Bournemouth’s major move up to the Premier League; granted, my excitement was based upon south coast bias, more so than general, objective intrigue about a new team joining the ranks. However, Bournemouth might just set the division alight, with fresh faces and bounding creativity that some of the bigger clubs overlook due to three-point pressures mounted upon their shoulders. Undeniably, behind Bournemouth’s dumbfounding success is talented, quick-footed striker, Callum Wilson. The 23-year-old has brought much joy to Bournemouth fans over the past year, and I was looking forward to seeing the man in action this season, in a red-and-black-striped jersey. However, I am currently sifting through articles outlining rumours that Wilson might be accepting a transfer to Aston Villa.

Aston Villa’s interest in the Bournemouth star no doubt springs from his instrumental presence for his club last season, but mostly derives from their need to replace Christian Benteke. Liverpool’s plans to poach Benteke might, therefore, begin something of an unfortunate domino effect; Bournemouth might then suffer the blow if Callum Wilson decides a change of scenery might be a worthwhile career-feathering choice, and further put the kibosh on the club’s designs to take the Premier League by storm.

My concern in this matter comes from a couple of places, really; I think seeing how Southampton still appeared the underdogs for much of last season, and how they flourished and wowed all too quickly, showcased that managing teams without the stress and tension in the dressing room really pays dividends. Granted, the trials and tribulations of the Premier League might be all too much for Bournemouth to handle, but I think that the Cherries have what it takes to meet criteria. My father also used to work in Bournemouth whilst we still lived back home (Southampton), so feel connected to the region and, therefore, this team a tad. Thus, Callum Wilson’s departure would really be a pointless sanction for Bournemouth; they might not make a dent in the top flight at all, if Wilson were to flee.

Indeed, Callum Wilson isn’t the only chap on the team. However, let us not forget that this is a man who netted 23 pretty snazzy, yet comfortable, goals last season – only three off Manchester City Herculean, Sergio Agüero. Given that Wilson’s Bournemouth have made the Premier League for the first time, his goal tally is no mean feat at all. Their astonishing position earned is a fabulous achievement, too; neither should be sniffed at. Yann Kermorgant is another to claim plenty of goals for the side, though, so Bournemouth wouldn’t rely solely on Wilson, but I’d argue that they absolutely need him.

Charlie Austin of Queens Park Rangers is amid the same gaggle of rumours, though, and would allegedly be the better option to sign with Aston Villa. Learning that makes me mop my brow a little. So, it could be possible that Villa might drop their interest in Callum Wilson.

Irrespective of outside bids for the Coventry-born Bournemouth hotshot, Callum Wilson should remain with the side he will make waves with in the Premier League. I hope he will stay; holding down his position as something of a modern day hero with Bournemouth would be beneficial, not only for his own career, but his team. If there is ever a time to shine, he is now in the right division and has the opportunity to do so.
