After trading a 2016 6th round pick for the negotiating rights to Carl Soderberg, the Avalanche have locked him up.

The 29-year old centerman was originally drafted by St. Louis in the 2nd round of the 2004 Entry Draft, but his rights were traded to the Boston Bruins in 2007. He was signed to a three-year entry level deal by the club in 2013 that ran through this past season. Although he had his best numbers in 2013-14 (73 GP, 16G, 48P), Soderberg turned in a solid campaign in just his second full NHL season, posting 13 goals and 44 points in an 82 game campaign that was the most challenging one for Boston in years as they missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the year they traded for Soderberg, 2007.
Soderberg commanded some big money ($5 million per season) and roughly got his wish with a different club, the Avalanche, who may make the countering move that everyone is expecting shortly involving Ryan O’Reilly.
As CapFriendly states, the Avalanche just don’t have the space to fulfill his demands (Max contract under salary cap($60 million) with other free agents to sign in the coming years including Nathan MacKinnon.
with Soderberg signed, COL now has roughly $8.6M in Cap space & 6 2015 picks #CapFriendly

The trade shores up the bottom six for the Avs down the middle, and the wait is on for any corresponding moves they may make on Draft Day.
