Last Word on Sports is proud to present their hockey podcast, On the Powerplay with Ben and Dave. Join Ben Kerr and Dave Gove each week as they take a look around the Hockey World focusing on the big issues of the NHL and elsewhere.
Dave and Ben are back in this rant filled, season ending edition of On the Powerplay.
The boys look back at the Stanley Cup Final, and congratulate the Blackhawks for their third championship in the last six years. While Ben and Dave (along with many others) predicted the Hawks to win the series in six games, that does not mean the series went exactly to form. What surprised the boys? Where was the turning point in the series? How did puck possession and faceoff wins play a key role? Why are the Tampa Bay Lightning a team to fear in the future? What can they learn from this defeat? After looking at these questions Ben goes on a rant about Jon Cooper’s coaching in the Cup Finals. Why did Ben feel that Cooper underplayed stars like Victor Hedman and Steven Stamkos, and how did it hurt his club.
Dave then looks at the Calder Cup finals where the Manchester Monarchs won the AHL Championship in their final year as an AHL club. The boys look at Jordan Weal, Colin Miller, and Derek Forbort and assess their chances of making the Kings next season. Later Ben and Dave rant about the quality of the streams the AHL produces and compare them to the OHL, WHL, and QMJHL asking why the league can’t even match what is provided in Canadian Junior Hockey.
Lastly the boys look at the situation between the Arizona Coyotes and the City of Glendale. What is the real reason for the City attempting to break the lease with the team? What does the court case mean to where the Coyotes will play next season? Where could they be headed down the road? Staying in Glendale? Scottsdale? Vegas? Seattle? Quebec City? Ontario? Finally Ben provides one more rant to close out the show on the hypocrisy of the stance of the major professional sports leagues towards gambling and the encouragement of fantasy sports by those leagues.
All this and more, on the powerplay.
