Quick Notes for the LWOS Set Up & Shut Down Report May 9th
Houston Street, who had thrown 8 scoreless innings to start the season, has now given up 5 earned runs in his last 3.2 innings pitched. That includes back-to-back blown saves on Wednesday and Thursday night. With Street pitching the last three games straight, there is a strong chance that he will not be used tonight if the Angels find themselves in a save situation. Joe Smith will more than likely get the nod. Street is no danger of losing his job.
Joakim Soria was on point last night, as he tossed 1.1 scoreless innings last night recording 4 strikeouts in route to his 11th save of the season. He was efficient throwing 16 pitches (14 for strikes). Soria has taken the closer job and ran off with it (1.38 ERA and 11 K in 13 IP) after Joe Nathan went down for the season. He is firmly entrenched as the Tigers “Shut Down” man.
Andrew Miller is good.
I mean really good. Miller tossed another scoreless 9th inning on Thursday night to record his A.L. leading 12th save of the season. He had 2 strikeouts and 1 walk and his season line now looks as good as a cold beer on a warm sunny day: 14.2 IP, 3 H, 8 BB, 25 K, 0.00 ERA, and 0.75 WHIP. I know it’s still way too early but if he keeps this production up, Miller could be in line to be the first reliever to win the A.L. CY Young Award since Dennis Eckersley in 1992.
Greg Holland returned from the DL yesterday and showed no sign of his injury. He was the definition of efficient, needing only 6 pitches to notch his 5th save of the season. With Holland now healthy, Wade Davis will go back to set up duties.
Glen Perkins tossed 1.1 scoreless innings last night recording 1 strikeout, and receiving his 10th save of the season. Perkins has not walked a batter in 13.1 IP to start the season. Too early in the season to tell but Perkins is in the final year of his 3-year contract with the Twins (there is a team option for 2016) and if the Twins are no where near contention when the trade deadline hits, Perkins may find himself on a different team and one that may need him in the set up role instead of closing.
