Fantasy Profile: Ben Revere, OF, Philadelphia Phillies

FANTASY PROFILE: BEN REVERE, OF, PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

Ben Revere can get from Point A to Point B pretty quickly. He could probably lap Billy Butler on a trip around the bases. He was probably that kid on the playground that said, “Want to see me run to China and back?” *pause* “Want to see me do it again?” He’s fast, is what I’m trying to say.

Unfortunately, for fantasy purposes, that only makes him a 2-and-a-half trick pony, because he has quite possibly the least power in the bigs (2 career HR in over 2000 PA) and hits atop an aging, decrepit Phillies lineup. The “half” trick is scoring runs. Last year, sitting atop one of the worst lineups in baseball, with elite speed and an average OBP, Revere managed to score 71 runs, which is an above-average total.

The two “full” tricks he has are well-established skills at this point: he steals a lot of bases and hits for a good average. He’s locked in for about 40+ stolen bases and an average somewhere around .290-.300. The average is helped by his speed and ability to make good contact, but if he walked at, at least, a league-average rate, he could probably steal 60+ bases.

It may sound strange, seeing as how bad Philadelphia is, but Revere is probably lucky that he is on the Phillies. His .324 career OBP would probably have him batting 7^th or 8^th for most teams, instead of leadoff for the Phillies. Fortunately for him, the Phillies don’t have many better options right now, so draft him for what he is: a cheap source of steals and batting average.
