Earthquakes Midfielders Fatai Alashe and Tommy Thompson Called for Youth National Team Duty

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that midfielders Fatai Alashe and Tommy Thompson have been called in for youth national team duty. Alashe will join the U.S. U-23 squad for a training camp in Bosnia & Herzegovina as the team begins its qualifying preparations for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Thompson will join the U.S. U-20 team for the first foreign training camp of the year in England.

The U-23 team will train from March 23-26 and then face Bosnia’s U-23 National Team on Friday, March 27, in Tuzla, before travelling to face Denmark on Tuesday, March 31. Herzog has served as a Senior Men’s National Team assistant coach since 2011. This camp will be his first as head coach of the U-23 team. Herzog’s assistants include John Hackworth, who serves as head coach of the U-15 Boys’ National Team, MNT scout Matthias Hamann, and goalkeeper coach Memo Valencia.

U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team head coach Tab Ramos has named 20 players to training camp from March 23-30, which will include a closed door match against Tottenham Hotspur’s Under-21 team on Friday, March 27 in London, followed by a matchup against England’s Under-21 Men’s National Team on Sunday, March 29 at 11 a.m. ET at Home Park in Plymouth. Neither game will be streamed or televised.

This will be the U-20’s first training camp of the year as the team continues its preparation for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup, taking place this summer in New Zealand from May 30-June 20.

Following the trip to England, the USA will travel to Austria for a second foreign camp running from April 18-26, that will feature games against Qatar’s and Croatia’s U-20 sides. The USA was drawn into Group A of the U-20 World Cup alongside host New Zealand, Ukraine and first-time participant Myanmar. The U.S. opens the tournament on May 30 against Myanmar, continues play on June 2 against New Zealand, and wraps up the group stage against Ukraine on June 5.
