Chicago Blackhawks forward Joakim Nordstrom has been suspended two games for boarding Arizona Coyotes defenceman Oliver Ekman-Larsson on Thursday night’s game in Glendale, Arizona on March 12. The announcement was made by the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety today.
Nordstrom, 23, tried to sweep the puck away from Ekman-Larsson while the Coyotes goaltender was pulled for an extra attacker. Missing the puck and with Ekman-Larsson having reached it first near the boards, Nordstrom shoved Ekman-Larsson from behind. Ekman-Larsson had his back to Nordstrom but made no movements to change direction, giving Joakim Nordstrom his back area. Nordstrom then shoved with both gloves on Ekman-Larsson’s numbers to propel him dangerously into the boards.
With two assists in 31 games this season and having only played 16 other NHL games, Nordstrom has no suspension or infraction history with the NHL. Ekman-Larsson, 23, was taken directly to the dressing room after the hit. Following the game, Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said it wasn’t very serious and Ekman-Larsson could play Saturday night.
It is expected for Blackhawks forward Andrew Desjardins to take the spot of Joakim Nordstrom for the two games he will be suspended.
