FANTASY PROFILE: NOLAN ARENADO, 3B, COLORADO ROCKIES

LWOS Ranking 6, Captain’s Value: $10.61

Arenado had quite a season last year even though he only played 111 games (due to a fractured finger). He crushed 18 HR and had a .287 AVG. If he manages to stay healthy all season long, we’re talking about a 25 + HR player.

Last year Arenado’s slash line was .287 / .328 / .500 which is really sharp and much improved comparing it to  his .267 / .301 / .405 from 2013 . The interesting part here is that even though he played 22 games less in 2014, his stats improved from 2013. The Extra Base Hits increased considerably from  8.4% to 11.6%. His power also amplified, the AB/HR were of 24.0 (the MLB average is 37.5) and not to mention his OPS which went from .706 to .828. His production at the plate came mostly from his patience. He managed to strike out 58 times last year, giving him a 12.4 SO%.

Arenado’s source of power comes from Coors Field. Out of 18 HR, 16 were at home along with 45 of his 61 RBI. We all know that anyone that plays at Coors Field has advantage (as a pitcher it’s definitely a disadvantage).

Another thing that’s worth pointing out is his value while having baserunners when he’s batting. He had a .323 BABIP and 48 RBI. Without runners on base the BABIP dropped to .271 and had only 12 RBI (obviously from solo HR). But either way, you are looking at a run producer and a player that will put the ball on play.

Nolan Arenado is one of baseball’s top third basemen, and being only 23, he will only get better and better. He is typically drafted from the 5th round to the 7th, so if you don’t have a 3B entering the 5th round, you should consider drafting Arenado.
