FANTASY PROFILE: J.J. HARDY, SS, BALTIMORE ORIOLES
LWOS Ranking 15, Captain’s Value: $1.38
J.J. Hardy was great in 2013, hitting .263 with 25 HR and 76 RBI. His power made him a great fantasy player at a rather weak SS position. Hardy’s power was limited in 2014, hitting only 9 HR in 529 AB. This sudden lack of power could be due to the nagging wrist/back injuries he had last season. It also could be due to the decline of an aging shortstop. Hardy, now 32 years old, had career lows in Isolated Power (ISO), HR/FB ratio, and BB%, posting marks well below league average. Hardy won’t be this bad in 2015, but how much of a rebound can we expect?
Drafting a 32 year-old shortstop with wrist and back injuries is a recipe for disaster. However, if Hardy can stay healthy, a nice bounce-back season could be in store. Target Hardy in the later rounds of your draft; just don’t expect another 30 HR season.
