FANTASY PROFILE: ADEINY HECHAVARRIA, SS, MIAMI MARLINS

LWOS Ranking 30, Captains’ Value -$1.74

A contact hitter with no power and limited base-running skills, Adeiny Hechavarria does not have much to offer to fantasy owners. Debuting with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, Hechavarria owns a career 83.9% contact rate that has so far translated into a career .251 average. Hechavarria was able to hit .274 in 2014 but that also carried a slightly inflated .323 BABIP. His career 16.6 K% is above average but his impatience is shown with a career 4.7 BB%. Hechavarria does show some skill on the basepaths with 11 SB in 2013 and 7 SB in 2014. However, he was caught stealing 10 times in 2013 and 5 times in 2014 giving him a cringing 54% career SB rate. League SB average in 2014, for comparison, was 73%. Hechavarria may start to see less of the steal sign going forward.

One interesting thing I noticed was that from 2012-14, Hechavarria’s GB rate had risen from 47.9%,51.8%, and 53.9% respectively. In the same time frame, his FB rate had dropped from 30.9%,27.8%, and 23.9% respectively. If Hechavarria can continue to have good contact and drive the ball hard on the ground, I believe his decent speed could possibly help him continue to produce an above league average AVG. Lady luck though, will always have a say in that. The possibility for a decent average and a handful of SB is Hechavarria’s only value, and that’s why he is placed within the bottom five of our SS rankings.
