FANTASY PROFILE: ALEXEI RAMIREZ, SS, CHICAGO WHITE SOX
LWOS Ranking 5, Captain’s Value: $14.74
In real life, Alexei Ramirez is much more valuable to his team defensively than he is offensively (career wRC+ of 91). Ironically, his offensive skill set is more valuable to fantasy owners than they are to his team.
While he consistently produces below average wRC+ totals, he is also one of the few shortstops that can be counted on to hit for an acceptable amount of power (he’s hit 15+ HR in 5 of his 7 seasons) and he’s coming off his third straight season of 20+ SB.
Last year, his HR/FB rate came in at 8.4% which is very close to his career total 8.2% indicating that he should hit somewhere around 15 HR. His BABIP of .292 was also very close to his .295 career total indicating that an AVG around .270 is reasonable to expect. Even though things such as his low BB% rate (below 4% for the last three seasons) may hurt the White Sox in real life, a respectable batting average and respectable power totals gives him a solid spot in our shortstop rankings.
