FANTASY PROFILE, BRETT LAWRIE, OAKLAND ATHLETICS
LWOS Ranking 22, Captain’s Value: $2.73
When Brett Lawrie burst onto the scene in Toronto during the 2011 season, he gave the Toronto Blue Jays front office and potential fantasy owners a glimpse of his potential. In 43 games after his call-up, he hit 9 HRs, had 25 RBIs, scored 26 runs, had 7 SBs and an OPS of .953. What has happened since the 2011 season has been three disappointing, injury-riddled seasons. Lawrie has played in a little over 300 games in three seasons, with totals of 34 HRs, 132 RBIs and an OPS of a little over.720.
A November trade to his third organization (he was originally drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and then traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for Shaun Marcum) landed him with Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics. Perhaps a change of scenery will help although a move from hitter-friendly Rogers Centre to the cavernous Oakland Coliseum does not on the surface portend a power increase. An increased fly ball rate (39.3%) in 2014 as a higher HR/fly ball rate (14.5%) does indicate a power growth is possible. Eligibility at both 2B and 3B adds to his fantasy value although he has significantly better value at 2B. A possible upside of 25 HRs (somewhat rare for a 2nd baseman) is there if you want to roll the dice.
