FANTASY PROFILE: JEDD GYORKO, 2B, SAN DIEGO PADRES
LWOS 2B RANKING: 20, CAPTAIN’S VALUE: $1.27
Jedd Gyorko was one of the more disappointing players at second base in 2014. After a stellar rookie season in 2013 where he blasted 23 home runs despite missing about 6 weeks with an injury, he managed just 10 in 2014 to go along with a measly .210 batting average. This came as no surprise to some, however, as he had serious plate discipline issues in his rookie season, posting a 33/133 walk-to-strikeout ratio while swinging at pitches outside the strike zone too often.
You might be able to chalk up his awful 2014 to injury though. For the first two months or so, he dealt with plantar fasciitis, which is a very painful foot injury that was clearly bothering him until he was placed on the disabled list in June. From opening day until June 3rd, his last game before he was placed on the disabled list, he hit at a putrid .162/.213/.270 rate. Upon his return, he hit .260/.348/.398. Hevstarted to make some improvements in his plate discipline as well as get some of his power back. Whether the injury (which is one that builds up over time) was holding him back or he made adjustments to his approach/swing while he was on the DL is unclear, but it appears that, despite the disappointing end totals, Jedd Gyorko’s 2014 was actually a year of progress.
At age 26, there is still room for improvement. The Padres have beefed up their lineup with some power by adding Will Myers, Matt Kemp, and Justin Upton, so maybe that will allow Gyorko to take a more conservative approach at the plate, instead of swinging at everything and trying to hit a homerun. He still has 15-20 homerun potential, which is very rare at second base as well as the middle infield in general. If he continues to improve his plate discipline and stays healthy, Gyorko could easily bounce back and put up top-10 second base numbers in 2015. Coming off of a bad year, he is going to be cheap in fantasy drafts and auctions, and could be the steal of the draft at second base in 2015.
