Fantasy Profile: Paul Goldschmidt, 1B, Arizona Diamondbacks
Paul Goldschmidt missed the last 8 weeks of the 2014 season with a broken left hand suffered when he was hit by a pitch. It was deemed a minor break, as surgery was not required. A CBS sports report had him taking batting practice with teammates at the end of September before a game in St. Louis, suggesting he should be good to go come opening day and will be the full time 1B for Hale and Co.
One of my personal favorite players in the game today, Paul Goldschmidt has the entire package. His 75 homers since 2012 rank him 19th among qualified hitters. His 42 stolen bases since 2012 rank him 3rd among qualified hitters with at least 75 homers during that span. His average (.296) is 22nd, slugging (.528) is 8th and OBP (.386) is 9th among qualified hitters since 2012. He displays good plate discipline as well with a career 12.4 BB% and a 22.4 K%. If you want to nit pick you could point out the slightly below average K% (which tends to happen with power hitters) but really there isn’t anything to complain about.
Goldschmidt is 27 and in the prime of his career. His high average, power, and good speed make him an elite fantasy player and a no doubt 1st round pick.
