Athleticism: A-
Very good athlete at the runningback position, and past test numbers appear to suggest as much. More explosive running in a straight line than moving laterally, but lateral movement is not to be discounted. Able to hurdle defenders and dive for catches while retaining his balance. Showcased game-breaking return ability as a sophomore that can translate to the NFL.
Inside Run: C
Runs too upright and with a narrow base, even for his size. Too easily brought down by arm tackles and gets spun around by contact. Capable of hitting holes hard but doesn’t grind yards between the tackles. Takes a false step out of his stance on inside runs hindering his ability to hit the hole efficiently. Collides with his blockers too often and needs better patience.
Outside Run: B+
Quicker than fast, but lacks the homerun gear to breakaway in the open field. Explosive first step and can go from zero to sixty initially, but doesn’t show the same burst out of his cuts. Very shifty and keeps defenders off balance, but won’t make explosive cuts or juke anyone out of their cleats. Too impatient and routinely outruns his blockers downfield rather than slow his pace and pick up a block. All too willing to duck out of bounds rather than
Blocking: D
Aware blocker and competitive is more competitive than his size and height would suggest. Is not a finesse back and is willing to play the role of a complete runningback. Able to mirror in pass protection, but lacks the power and anchor to successfully hold up. Too often drops his head and dives at the legs of the defender.
Receiving: B
Used on flats, screens, and wheel routes to great effect. Capable of making plays on the football downfield. Used extensively as a receiver out of the backfield. Showed good hands and body control to make catches outside of his frame. Picks up yards after the catch with his elusiveness.
Red Flags: Moderate Durability Concerns
Bottom Line: A nifty athlete, Duke Johnson made a good choice in declaring for the 2015 NFL Draft as he is in the conversation for the top speed back this year. More quick than powerful, Johnson will need to learn with better patience and set up blocks to continue to be successful at the next level, particularly as zone blocking teams will covet his explosive straight line movements. Johnson has the traits to develop into a three-down back, but likely need to have his snap count monitored in order to protect him from injury, as his smaller size, pad level, and past history are a concern.
Comparison: DeMarco Murray
Grade: 8.3 (3rd Round)
