Report: Montreal Impact on the Verge of Hiring Assistant Coach Enzo Concina

There were rumours late Tuesday that Enzo Concina was on the verge of joining the Montreal Impact as an assistant coach. Tony Marinaro of TSN690 reported that Concina would come in as an assistant coach to help Frank Klopas steady the ship after a rocky 2014 MLS season. The Italian was an assistant coach with Napoli between 2010-2014 and DC United in 2014. If the report is accurate Concina would join the Impact coaching staff and replace former assistant Nick Kounenakis.

It would be a homecoming for Enzo who played ten games for the Impact in 1994 scoring one goal. Most recently Enzo Concina was an assistant coach for DC United, helping DC finish first in the MLS Eastern Conference in 2014. The Impact are looking for a similar turnaround in 2015, after finishing dead last in the MLS standing last season.

Concina was a central defender who played for multiple teams in Italy between 1982-1994. The Bleu Blanc Noir will be looking to tap into some of his experience in helping develop their own young corps of central defenders.

Impact Lock Up Bakary Soumare:

After selecting Soumare with the first pick of the second round of the 2014 MLS re-entry draft, the Impact signed the Malian central defender. The centre back position was one Montreal was looking to fill after the departure of Matteo Ferrari in November. The Impact will be hoping that the former Chicago Fire player will help anchor the back line in 2015.

Andrés Romero Signs with Montreal:

It has been a busy week for the Impact, as they also signed Argentinian midfielder Andrés Romero from Brazilian club Tombense FC. Romero has been on loan with Montreal for the last two seasons. He was named the 2014 Montreal Impact Most Valuable Player. Head Coach Frank Klopas stated that, “We are very pleased to have secured Andre’s permanent transfer from Tombense FC. I was confident that we would reach an agreement. Andrés did great things in 2014 and we believe he will continue to help this team in the future.”

With training camp opening up on January 23, time in running out for the Impact to add another striker to the squad.
